21 Best Things to Do in Sanur, Bali: A Local-Lover’s Guide

Sanur is not the part of Bali that shouts for your attention. She is far too confident for that. Sanur simply hands you a coffee, points you towards the sea and lets you discover—usually by day two—that your shoulders have dropped about three centimetres.

After years of visiting, living and eating our way around this lovely seaside village, these are the things we genuinely recommend. Some are classic Sanur attractions; others are small pleasures that turn an ordinary holiday into the one you keep talking about.

1. Watch a Sanur sunrise

Sanur faces east, so the sun rises over the sea. Head to the beachfront early, find a patch of sand or a café table and watch the fishing boats become silhouettes against the pink sky. It is beautiful, free and one of the few things capable of getting me out of bed voluntarily before coffee.

2. Walk the Sanur beachfront path

The long paved beachfront path is the heartbeat of Sanur. Walkers, cyclists, dogs, families and coffee seekers all share the route. Start anywhere, wander until hunger strikes, then stop at whichever café looks inviting. That is not poor planning. That is the Sanur method.

3. Cycle beside the sea

Hire a bicycle and explore more of the coast without turning the day into a military operation. Go slowly, keep to the appropriate lane, watch for pedestrians and stop often. The joy is in the dawdling.

4. Spend a morning at Mertasari Beach

At the southern end of Sanur, Mertasari Beach has a relaxed local feel, sea views and easy access to the beach path. The water changes with the tide, so check conditions before planning a swim. It is also a lovely place for a gentle walk and a cold drink.

5. Have breakfast by the beach

Beachfront breakfast is one of Sanur’s great pleasures. Try The Beach Café for a relaxed brunch with an ocean view, or Luhtu’s Bakery near Sindhu Beach for sandwiches, cakes and toes-in-the-sand charm.

6. Eat at a local warung

Warungs are a brilliant way to try Indonesian food without frightening your holiday budget. Our favourites include SMS Warung, Lilla Warung, Warung Little Bird, Warung Baby Monkeys, Warung Sports and Warung Blanjong. Ask what the house specialty is and be adventurous.

7. Visit Sindhu Night Market

For an easy introduction to Indonesian street food, wander through Sindhu Night Market in the evening. Look for satay, nasi campur, bakso and sweet treats. Take small notes, choose busy stalls and build your own progressive dinner.

8. Book a proper spa afternoon

Do not squeeze a massage between seventeen other activities. Book the treatment, arrive early and make it part of the day. Donna Spa is one of our long-time favourites for consistently lovely treatments and a relaxing atmosphere.

9. Go to Icon Bali

Yes, some people love it and others think malls and Bali should never appear in the same sentence. We love Icon Bali for air-conditioning, shopping, restaurants, ocean views, a cinema and an easy wet-weather outing. Traditional Sanur and a modern mall can coexist. Life is roomy enough for both.

10. Try a Sanur happy hour

Happy hour is practically a local research discipline. Beachfront favourites have included Kayumanis Seaside, La Playa, Tootsies, Bobby’s and venues around Sindhu. Offers and times change, so always check directly before ordering the second cocktail in the name of science.

11. Create your own beach pub crawl

Choose three or four venues along the beachfront path. Have one drink or mocktail and one shared snack at each, then walk to the next stop. The stroll, sea breeze and changing view are the real event. It is a pub crawl, not an Olympic sport—eat, hydrate and take your time.

12. Have gelato at Massimo

Massimo’s gelato counter is a Sanur institution. There may be a queue, but choosing flavours gives everyone something useful to argue about while waiting. Coconut, pistachio and fruit flavours are regular temptations.

13. Take a Balinese cooking class

A cooking class gives you more than lunch: you learn about ingredients, techniques and the stories behind the food. Novi’s Bali Kitchen and SMS Warung are names worth investigating. Confirm current schedules and inclusions before booking.

14. Browse Jalan Danau Tamblingan

Sanur’s main street is lined with cafés, restaurants, spas, boutiques and useful shops. Walk a section rather than trying to conquer the entire road in midday heat. Coffee stops are not weakness; they are sensible tropical management.

15. Order something custom-made

Vin’s Leather on Jalan Danau Tamblingan made Craig a soft leather bag in his chosen colour. If you want a custom piece, visit early in your holiday and allow time for it to be made. Bring the original item or a clear photo and agree on the details and price first.

16. Enjoy afternoon tea

For a special treat, ask Tandjung Sari about afternoon tea and book ahead. For a casual cake stop, Batujimbar Café’s pineapple and walnut carrot cake has caused us to abandon restraint on more than one occasion.

17. Take a hotel day pass

Some Sanur hotels offer day passes, subject to availability. Prama has previously been a family favourite for its pool facilities, children’s water-play area and nearby Bamboo Bar. Check the current price and inclusions directly with the hotel.

18. See a film on a rainy day

When the tropical rain arrives with theatrical enthusiasm, a movie at Icon Bali is an excellent plan. Add lunch, shopping and coffee and suddenly the wet-weather day looks suspiciously good.

19. Try a creative class

Look for a ceramics session at Kevala Studio or another local workshop. It is a relaxed way to meet people and take home something better than an emergency airport souvenir.

20. Use Sanur as a day-trip base

Sanur is well placed for outings to Bali Safari, Ubud and boats to the Nusa islands. Travel times vary enormously with traffic, so leave breathing room in the schedule. Bali traffic treats a timetable more like a friendly suggestion.

21. Do gloriously little

Leave an afternoon empty. Swim. Read. Talk. Nap. Order food. Holidays are not performance reviews, and Sanur is particularly good at reminding you.

Make Sanur easy from Sanur Soul Villa 1

Sanur Soul Villa 1 is a private four-bedroom villa sleeping up to eight guests near southern Sanur, Mertasari Beach, the beach walk, cafés, restaurants and spas. It gives families and groups room to explore together—and a private pool, fully air-conditioned living area and enormous 100-inch TV for the very important art of doing nothing afterwards.
